GMKS since last two decades has been working for protection of natural resources and reviving all traditional practices of the region. Soil conservation, land regeneration, development of pastureland, biodiversity restoration, increase soil fertility, making water availability for agriculture practices and balancing the ecology of the region are some of the cardinal initiatives that demonstrate best practices of managing local natural resources.
Soil conservation and restoration of biodiversity are the two linear developmental programmes that have brought a significant impact on livelihood of poor people.
Aforestation, a thrust area of NRM programme, involves massive plantation of saplings and trees in order to decrease the water velocity that flows down the hills. GMKS regularly educates the villagers to plant maximum of number of trees at places where there are chances of soil erosion during rainy season. In most of the villages people have planted trees to stop soil erosion and to avoid other damages being occurred by torrential rain. Another purpose of aforestation is to ensure the availability of firewood for villagers.
One third of the income is generated from livestock and cattle. Livestock plays a crucial role in solving the problem of poverty. GMKS initiated couple of activities in these villages to help the people to increase the supply of fodder by developing community pastureland. Development of the pastureland has helps the villagers to sow variety fodder seeds leading to significantly increase the amount of fodders for livestock.
GMKS has been helping the communities to construct contour trenches in the villages. The contour trenches construction programme covers 400 hectares of land in the locality and its fodder development programme spread into 750 hectares of lands. Under its plantation programme, 1,30,000 trees were planted in the locality over recent years. The soil conservation work is being extended up to 1840 acres of lands. This apart, GMKS constructed 5 masonry check dams, 40 stone wall terraces, 44 community wells. It installed 22 lift irrigations and revived 360 old wells in the villages. |
